He died in 2020, leaving a legacy in professional football. Born in Hot Springs, Arkansas, he played as a halfback and wide receiver in the NFL. He was the first Black player to sign with the Washington Redskins, helping to integrate the team in 1962. He had a successful playing career with the Cleveland Browns and Redskins, earning multiple Pro Bowl selections and setting team records. After retiring as a player, he worked for over 40 years as an executive and scout for the Redskins. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1983. His number was retired by the Redskins after his death. Throughout his life, his connection to Hot Springs remained notable as the place where his athletic career began. His contributions on and off the field had a lasting impact on the sport and the community.
