HOT SPRINGS WORLD CLASS HIGH SCHOOL: Freedom Mural project

Dsc04058

Hot Springs World Class High School issued the following announcement on Oct. 22.

Our Art Club students drew themselves into downtown Hot Springs as part of an inspiring Freedom Mural project, with help and vision from professional artist Perrion Hurd. At the intersection of Market Street and Central Avenue, the beginnings of a mural dedicated to the inspiring life and influence of Harriet Tubman began today!

The City of Hot Springs, Arkansas Government enlisted Perrion Hurd for this project - known for his memorable work in downtown Little Rock and the Argenta Arts District of North Little Rock and at cultural/art centers including Crystal Bridges and the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center - who designed a mural that could connect us to our past and also use the talent of our local kids. He traced each of our students onto the wall, and then guided them in using their own artistic abilities to add detail and character to each image in the mural. Students wrapped up their effort today; Perrion Hurd and his daughter will work over the coming weeks to bring to life a colorful surrounding scene with Harriet Tubman featured looking over/leading the group. This wonderful new addition to our downtown is scheduled for completion by November 21.

HSWCHS Art teacher Mrs. Tipton notes, "This is more than a mural ... our class has spent 6 weeks studying Harriet Tubman and the many roles she played in securing safety, freedom, and a new life for so many. During her own life, and through her legacy, she changed history with her love and her courage. No matter where you are from, or your ethnicity or race, you or someone in your family has been impacted by oppression or discrimination. This mural honors Harriet Tubman's commitment to stopping those barriers. This mural is about reminding our city that love and unity are for everyone."
