The Little Rock women’s golf team opened the Great River Cup at Windance Country Club in Gulfport, Mississippi, with a split result on Monday. The Trojans lost their morning match to Louisiana-Monroe 3.5-1.5 but rebounded in the afternoon by defeating James Madison with the same score.
Head coach Jenna Birch commented on the team’s performance, stating, “It was not a bad first day. ULM is a great team and played us very well. We bounced back well in the afternoon and got a big win over James Madison.”
Sophomore Lara Martin was undefeated for the day, securing Little Rock’s only point against Louisiana-Monroe with a 3&2 win over Daniela Campillo Martinez and then earning another victory against James Madison’s Bella Flores, winning 1 up.
Elvira Flodstrom halved both of her matches, providing steady play throughout the competition. Additional wins from Cloe Poizac and Eleonore Aernouts contributed to Little Rock’s success against James Madison.
With these results, Little Rock stands third among eight teams as they approach the final round of match play on Tuesday morning against Arkansas State. Arkansas State also finished Monday with one loss and one win.
Looking ahead to the final day, Birch said, “We are looking forward to the final day. We will have to play solid golf to beat Arkansas State. We are obviously very familiar with them. It will be a good test for us, but we feel good about it after the way we played against James Madison.”
Little Rock is scheduled to begin its final match at 8 a.m., aiming to finish strong in this early spring tournament.
